The Sports Grunt Story

Experience counts. Especially in sport.

When it comes down to making the correct decisions and determining the right judgments, those that have seen, heard and felt it all before are the people that generate the best outcomes.

Ross Lewis has been writing on sport at the top level before he was old enough to vote.

And after 25 years in the media game there isn't much that hasn't crossed Lewis's path, especially if it happened in his hometown of Perth or anywhere across the big sporting State of WA.

A veteran of two Olympic Games and world championship series in swimming, cycling, cricket and tennis but better known for his an extensive coverage of AFL and WAFL competitions, Lewis is the driving force behind Sports Grunt.

And it Lewis' extensive exposure to those pursuits and activities we love and love to hate that give Sports Grunt a unique perspective.

Lewis has won a number of journalism awards, including the NBL Writer of the Year prize in 2006, WA AFL news story of the year (2005) and is a seven-time victor in the WA Football Comission's WAFL story of the year prize. In 2011 he was the Best Online Performer and won Best News Story (Online) at the WAFC awards.

Sports Grunt will scrutinise all things sport. It is not so much an exercise in pushing club brands or the egos of particular aspects.

In this series of blog posts Sports Grunt will hold up a mirror to the trends and developments in sport - on and off the playing arena - so we can all identify the changing patterns, the waste of money, the successes of programs, the key issues and the attitude of the fans.

Ross Lewis' take on sport will also be closely linked to thewest.com.au of which he is Sports Editor.

Social media is also strongly used by administrators, clubs and athletes. And Sports Grunt will be keeping tabs on what the key players are tweeting, putting on Facebook or where they might be on Gowalla and Foursquare.

You can keep up to date with all the big sports news, views and muse with Lewis on his Twitter account.

The Grunt will also look closely at how the social media platforms are changing the way the media is dealing with sport - and vice versa.

WA's premier football league - the WAFL - is strong in the Sports Grunt office and there is a special page devoted to what might be going on in the 127-year-old competition.

It will one of The Grunt's missions to keep a close eye on what is happening around the State league, which will take another turn this year with the introduction of an Australia-wide Champions League involving Swan Districts, Claremont and East Perth.

But overall, Sports Grunt hopes to provide a different view - and the story behind the story - to the myriad media outlets following the same old formula.

The blog also welcome comments, tips or obersverations from suscribers.

So for something a little bit different, but still highly information, join in the Sports Gunt.

Yours in sport,
Ross Lewis
